Our climate is close to ideal for them: warm most of the year, humid, and rarely cold enough to slow a colony down. Add sandy soil that's easy to tunnel through and the crawlspace construction common in older Horry County homes, and pressure stays high year-round.
How Trelona Bait Stations Work
We install Trelona ATBS stations in the soil around your structure, spaced every 10–20 feet around the exterior. Each station is drilled and set flush to the ground with precision, so placement is exact and disruption to your landscape is minimal.
Each station holds bait containing novaluron, an insect growth regulator. Novaluron doesn't poison termites outright. It blocks their ability to produce chitin, which means they can't molt — and a termite that can't form a new exoskeleton dies.
Why that matters more than it sounds
Foraging workers find the station, feed, and carry bait back to the colony, sharing it mouth-to-mouth through a process called trophallaxis. So the material spreads through the colony rather than stopping at the termites that found it.
As workers die off, fewer are left to feed the soldiers and reproductives — which can't feed themselves. The colony starves from the inside while the bait is still working. That's colony elimination, not just a barrier that keeps them out of your house while they thrive next door.
Why we only do bait, not liquid
The other approach you'll be offered is a liquid barrier — treating the soil around the structure. It works, but it requires trenching the full perimeter, which is impractical where there's hardscape, slab construction, or landscaping you don't want dug up. And it protects the structure without doing anything about the colony, which is still out there.
We don't offer liquid treatments. Bait stations eliminate the colony, install with minimal disruption, and are monitored on an ongoing basis so new activity gets caught early. On the properties we treat in Horry County, that's the better answer often enough that we built the whole program around it.

Before anything is installed, we do a full inspection — for active termites, existing damage, and the conditions that invite them in. Based on what we find, your home is qualified for full warranty coverage, qualified with specific exclusions, or disqualified. If your home doesn't qualify for the warranty, you can still have the bait stations installed without damage coverage, or drop the termite portion for a lower monthly price.
The part worth reading twice
Your homeowners policy almost certainly excludes termite damage as a preventable maintenance issue. That means without a warranty, the repair bill is entirely yours.
Our warranty covers up to $1,000,000 in future damage from subterranean termites, with a zero-dollar deductible for a qualified home. That's the actual product you're buying — not the stations, and not the annual visit. It's who pays if termites get through.
The Agreement, in Plain Terms
- 24-month agreement, then month-to-month after that.
- Annual inspections are included for the life of the agreement.
- The bait stations remain the property of Neon. If the agreement ends, we'll need access to remove them.
- You can cancel within 3 business days of signing with written notice, no questions asked.
Renewal
At the end of your 24-month term, coverage continues month-to-month. You don't pay the installation fee again — the stations are already in the ground, and as long as the agreement is active, they stay in service protecting your home.
Swarm Season on the Coast
Swarming is the one time termites make themselves obvious, and it's how most homeowners find out.
- Eastern subterranean termites — roughly February through May, usually on warm days after rain, typically during daylight.
- Formosan termites — later, generally May into June, often at dusk and drawn to lights.
A swarm near your home doesn't mean the house is infested. It means a colony is established close by — and that's worth an inspection.
Signs Most Homeowners Miss
- Mud tubes — pencil-width dirt tunnels on foundation walls, piers, or crawlspace framing.
- Discarded wings in small piles near windows, doors, or light fixtures. Finding them inside is significantly more concerning.
- Hollow-sounding wood — they eat from the inside out, leaving a thin shell.
- Bubbling or rippled paint that looks like water damage with no water source.
- Sticking doors or windows from swelling, damaged framing.
What Invites Them In

Common Questions
How often are the stations checked?
The Trelona ATBS Annual label allows for annual inspection, and that's what the warranty includes. We'll check more often if activity warrants it — on a property with a live infestation or heavy pressure, shorter intervals make sense.
Are the stations safe around kids and pets?
The stations are installed in the ground and are locked. Novaluron works on the molting process of insects. As with every product we use, application follows the label, and your technician will answer specific questions about your property.
How long until the colony is gone?
Bait works through the colony over time rather than instantly. Field studies on Trelona have shown activity eliminated within months and remaining inactive well beyond that. Your technician will tell you what they're seeing at each check.
What if I already have termites right now?
Active infestations get addressed directly, and the recommendation depends on what the inspection finds. Sometimes that means bait, sometimes liquid, sometimes both. We'll tell you honestly which your situation calls for.
Do I need a CL-100 letter to sell my home?
Most South Carolina real estate transactions require a wood infestation report. Call us and we'll walk you through timing.
Can I skip the warranty and just buy the installation?
If your home doesn't qualify for the damages warranty — or you'd rather not carry it — you can still have the bait stations installed and monitored without the $1,000,000 damage coverage, for a lower monthly price. We'll always tell you honestly which situation yours is.
What does the warranty actually cover?
Future damage from subterranean termites at your home — that's it, and that's the point. It doesn't cover damage that already existed before your inspection. A qualifying inspection comes first, and your home is qualified, qualified with exclusions, or disqualified based on what we find.
Who owns the bait stations?
Neon does. They stay in the ground doing their job for as long as your agreement is active. If the agreement ends, you'll need to give us access to remove them.
